Download, Installation and Activation Notes
|
|
|
Installing and activating NotateIt is a simple process and most users
never encounter any problems.
Occasionally however, we do receive queries and the sections below outline the
various areas in more detail, which we hope you will find useful.

|
Download information and security
The installation file that you download is a standard Windows Installer
package delivered as a self-extracing executable (*.exe).
When you download, please ensure that your browser is set
to allow session (temporary) cookies since these are used to
manage your page navigation and the download itself.
The file should be saved to your local PC; if you attempt to
Open and install over the Internet it will fail.
Also, do not use a download manager since we have found that these
often do not work correctly with our site.
Vista users.
If you save the download file to a mapped network drive then you should
copy it to your local PC before installation. This will avoid a known issue
with Vista which could result in an error (ref 1327) during installation.
Security
All our installation downloads are digitally signed for security and you can
check that the certificate on your download is valid by right-clicking
on the file once it has been downloaded, selecting the "Digital Signatures" tab
and confirming that the signer is "Blade Software".
As a further check, you can also select the item from the "Signature list"
and then click on "Details" to fully validate the signature and certificate
with the issuing authority.
This helps confirm that the file really came from us and that it has not been altered
or corrupted since it was signed.
Installation
Step 1 - Administrator rights
NotateIt is installed for use by all users of the PC and the installation
process requires Administrator rights for this.
If you are installing in a corporate or similar environment,
there may be strict security policies in force
and you may need to seek assistance from your IT support staff and refer
them to this page.
Vista and Windows 7 users.
If you are not logged in as Administrator, then, when installation starts,
the User Access Control system will prompt you for an Administrator name
and password in order to continue.
XP users.
You should be logged on to your PC with Administrator
privileges.
We have found that most home users running Windows XP tend to run their PCs
with these privileges already set but, if you have adjusted your
security settings you should take this into account.
Step 2 - Installation
Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the location where you saved the
download file and then double-click on it.
The installation process will start and you need only follow the standard
on-screen installation instructions.
Internet access requirements
NotateIt requires access to the Internet for the following
program features available on the Help menu. In addition, NotateIt
may need to lauch your web browser to show you relevant information
for some of these options :
- Activation
- Feedback
- Access to Resources and Support
Windows firewall.
During installation, the Windows Firewall settings are
automatically adjusted to allow NotateIt the necessary Internet access.
If you run other firewall software, you should ensure that NotateIt
is granted permission to send and receive data through the firewall.
You may also run software that stops NotateIt from automatically
launching other programs. If so, please ensure that NotateIt can at least launch
your web browser otherwise you will be unable to access some of these
features.
Activating your Licence
When you activate NotateIt, it connects to our web servers to
obtain and save the licence for your PC installation and also updates
other NotateIt files as needed.
To activate NotateIt :
- Open NotateIt.
- Click on the "Activate" option and then click "OK".
- In the Wizard that opens, enter your Master Licence ID, as shown
on your download instructions.
Please check carefully that you enter this correctly since
it is easy to transpose some of the digits.
- On completion of the Wizard, NotateIt will connect
to our web servers to obtain the licence and latest updates
and activate your installation.
Once activated, NotateIt will automatically close and re-open ready for use.
If the activation reports that it was unable to connect to our web servers then
the problem is almost certainly to do with your firewall settings or other Internet access
controls and these should be checked carefully as outlined above.
